General Motors, Lockheed Martin develops a new lunar rover for NASA

Lockheed Martin and General Motors areย cooperatingย to develop the next generation of lunarย roversย forย transportingย astronauts on the surface of theย moon,ย fundamentallyย developingย and expandingย humanityโ€™sย deepย spaceย exploration footprint.ย These rovers will travelย fartherย than Apolloย General Motors.ย Provideย batteryย powerย technologyย and propulsion systems.ย 

Theย nextย generationย of Marsย roverย will be ableย toย better copeย withย rugged terrain.ย NASAโ€™sย Artemis program is sending humans back to theย moon,ย where they willย use various roverย explorationย and scientific experiments. NASAย isย lookingย for anย industryย approach to developย theย Lunar Terrain Vehicleย (LTV),ย whichย will enable astronauts to explore the lunar surfaceย moreย deeplyย thanย ever before. The LTV is the first of aย varietyย of surfaceย motorย vehiclesย requiredย byย NASAโ€™sย Artemis program.

To supportย NASAโ€™sย mission, the two industry leaders willย useย their unparalleled engineering, performance, technology, and reliabilityย toย developย uniqueย aircraftย with innovativeย capabilities.ย The result may allow astronauts to explore the surfaceย of the moonย inย an unprecedentedย wayย and supportย theย discoveryย ofย placesย thatย humans have never beenย to.ย Lockheedย Martin will lead the teamย onย theย basisย ofย moreย than 50ย yearsย ofย cooperationย betweenย Deep Spaceย andย NASA.ย 

Humanย and robotic spacecraft, such asย NASAโ€™sย Artemisย expedition-class Orion spacecraftย andย numerous planetaryย and Martianย spacecraft.ย Lockheed Martin Executive Vice President Rick Ambrose said:ย โ€œThisย alliance brings togetherย theย strongย innovationย capabilitiesย ofย theย twoย companiesย toย createย a transformativeย car.โ€ย 

Surface mobility isย essentialย forย achievingย andย maintainingย Long-termย exploration of the lunar surfaceย isย essential.ย These next-generation rovers willย greatlyย expandย the range ofย astronauts,ย as theyย conductย high-priority scientificย researchย on theย moon,ย whichย will ultimatelyย affectย human understanding of ourย positionย in the solar system. Generalย Motorsย is a leader in battery-electric andย powertrainย technologies.

Togetherย with Lockheed Martin andย itsย expertiseย inย spaceย exploration, we plan toย once again provideย supportย forย Americanย astronauts on theย moon.โ€ย Generalย Motorsย has aย goodย trackย recordย inย supporting NASA and working in theย aerospaceย industry.ย ย Theย company manufactured, tested, and integrated inertial guidance and navigation systems for the entire Apollo Moonย projectย (includingย Apollo 11 andย itsย first landing inย 1969).ย 

GM also helped develop the electric Apollo Lunarย mobileย vehicleย (LRV), including the chassis and wheels usedย inย theย Apollo 15-17 mission.ย Unlikeย the Apollo rover, whichย isย only 4.7 miles (7.6 kilometers) from the landing site, the nextย generationย ofย the lunarย roversย isย designed to travel aย greaterย distance to support the firstย trip toย theย southย poleย of theย moon.ย Theย roughย terrainย autonomyย and the autonomous system willย enableย the rover to prepare for human landing, provide commercial payload services, andย increaseย theย scopeย andย practicalityย of scientific payloads and experiments.
